Golden Valley walk at Hindhead Commons and the Devils Punch Bowl

Walking trail

In the autumn it is easy to see where this valley gets its name from. The golden leaves of the beeches, sycamores and oaks are beautifully contrasted by the dark green Scot’s pine trees.

National Trust car park at Devils Punch Bowl, GU26 6AB

1

From the car park walk northwards to reach the Devil's Punch Bowl view point. Bear left and follow the footpath through the trees. The path is skirting the southwest edge of the Punch Bowl. After 10 minutes, you'll reach a major junction with an electricity substation diagonally on the left. At this junction turn sharp left and proceed along the un-paved roadway until, after 5 minutes, you will arrive at the main road (Hindhead to Farnham). Cross the road and bear left along the pavement for about 50 metres to a muddy parking area with a National Trust sign welcoming you to the Golden Valley. You could also start your walk at this point if you choose to park here (post code GU26 6SQ).

2

Enter the woods where there is a post with the Red Golden Valley disc signage; take the right fork descending into the valley. This is a rough track and care is advised.

3

After about 15 minutes you'll arrive at a fence line where the signage points to the left and up a relatively steep and rutted pathway. At the top of the ascent turn right following the pathway which is well signed. Continue on this path which eventually curves around to the left with the remainder of the trail being relatively flat as it contours around the valley you have emerged from. Towards the end of the walk you will spot some housing through the trees to right. The path eventually brings you back to the original entrance to the woods and the main road.

4

From here there is the option of retracing your outbound steps. However, its also possible to return to the Devil's Punch Bowl car park by turning right following the pavement, crossing Tower Road, passing the garage and parade of shops on the right then arriving at the mini-roundabouts and turning left following the road back to the car park.
