About Bransdale Mill Bunkhouse

Newly refurbished. Enjoy a group holiday in this converted mill nestled in a secluded spot in the North York Moors National Park.

Built in the eighteenth century, this charming Grade II listed mill has been converted and recently refurbished into a basic but comfortable bunkhouse for 12 people and is perfect for large groups of friends or family.

Full of historic character - complete with flag-stone floors, wooden beams and a log burner in the sitting room – Brandsdale Mill Bunkhouse consists of kitchen, sitting room and dining room on the ground floor and two bunk-bedded dormitories, each sleeping 6, on the first floor. A nearby outbuilding houses toilets, showers and a drying room.

With no wifi or mobile phone signal and with only the sound of the water of the Hodge Beck running past, it is ideal for groups wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Layout

  • Ground floor

    The bunkhouse is accessed via steps leading down into entrance lobby. From the lobby, the door on right leads into kitchen and the door straight ahead leads in to sitting room. Another door from kitchen leads to stairs, and a further door in to the sitting room. The dining room is accessed through an open doorway from the sitting room.

  • First floor

    The first floor consists of two dormitories (one on either side of the stairs). Both sleep 6 in bunk beds.

  • Other floor(s)

    An outbuilding houses gents' WCs, basins, and showers (2 of each), a drying room (with washing machine), and ladies' WCs, basins, and showers (2 of each).

Notes for guests

Heating: There are storage heaters in every room, plus a solid fuel stove in the sitting room. A a small supply of logs will be provided upon arrival. Guests will need to supply any additional logs and kindling needed.

Bedding/linen: No bedding or linen provided other than tea towels.

Parking: There is parking for 4 cars (plus space for a minibus to park just before going down short steep incline to Mill). Two parking spaces are located immediately at the bottom of the hill (in front of outbuildings) and a further two are located over the bridge. Both areas are grass. If the weather has been adverse we advise leaving vehicles above the Mill, at the top of the short steep incline, approximately 30 meters from the Mill. The grassed areas are just 3 metres from the Mill entrance. The approach to the bunkhouse is by farm track and the last 30 meters to the Mill involves a steep, narrow incline; with great care vehicles can negotiate this but a four-wheel drive vehicle would be necessary in adverse weather.

Toilet block: Toilets, showers and a drying room are housed in a separate outbuilding close to the main bunkhouse

1 Acorn: simple living accommodation with basic furniture and fixtures fit for purpose, safe and clean. Running water and a WC are provided. There could be some limitations to heating and washing facilities (details of these will be stated clearly on the cottage's webpage). Bedding, linen and towels are supplied (with a few exceptions, which is again clearly stated). Facilities for basic catering and living are provided. Generally a 1 acorn cottage does not have wifi. Examples of a 1 acorn offer include Cartref, Wales and Rosedene, Worcestershire.

2 Acorn: a mid-quality range of furniture and fittings. Bathroom facilities are basic or there may be a high sleeps to bathroom ratio depending on the size of the cottage. Very few 2 acorn cottages have wifi and, similar to a 1 Acorn cottage, the kitchen white goods and washing facilities are basic in their offer. All 2 (and higher) Acorn cottages supply bedding, linen and towels. Examples of a 2 acorn offer include Engine Cottage, Cornwall and High Hallgarth, Cumbria.

3 Acorn: a good, standard offer. Generally it is correctly proportioned for the number of guests but could have a few compromises, for example a small sized kitchen, or a lower bathroom to guest ratio. The variety of white goods available will be better than a 2 Acorn cottage. Examples of a 3 acorn cottage include the Mustard Pot Cottage, Norfolk and Rose Cottage, Isle of Wight.

4 Acorn: these cottage have more premium furniture, fittings and lighting. Additionally it is likely to have added comfort extras. The ratio of bathrooms to guests will be higher, and the bathrooms would be more likely to have separate and spacious showers as opposed to over bath showers. Examples of a 4 Acorn offer include Portland House, Dorset and Stepper View, Cornwall.

5 Acorn: a luxury accommodation offer with very few limiting factors. It is well-equipped and has spacious facilities throughout the cottage. This is the highest offer available. The furniture is of high standard, and has real comfort for modern living. Examples of a 5 Acorn cottage include The Old Rectory, South Wales and West Gate Lodge, Yorkshire.
