Great Big Tree Climb

1. Climb a tree

We have some great trees in our parkland and woodland that almost invite you to climb them or come along to one of our tree climbing experience days. A highly skilled and friendly instructor can help you reach new heights in one of our big horse chestnut trees. Details of the next tree climb day can be found on our What’s On page.

Hughenden Den Building

4. Build a den

Head for Hughenden's woods where you’ll find fallen branches galore to build a perfect den. Our top tip: choose a dry flat spot for the most solid build. Please only use branches that have already fallen from the trees though.

Dog running with stick

12. Make a trail with sticks

Pick up sticks, stones or fallen leaves and lay a trail for your family to follow. Here’s a good way to make the best trail: gather up lots of sticks, lay them on the ground in arrow shapes, and choose a route that will lead your followers to a woodland den or secret treasure. Please just use fallen sticks and branches.

2. Roll down a really big hill

2. Roll down a really big hill

Hughenden is set on the side of a hill so we have the perfect slopes to roll down. Choose a grassy slope that's not too steep for you, where there are no wild flowers, and make sure you can see where you will end up before you start your roll! Head to our parkland and hunt down the ‘Ha-Ha’ for the best spot.

Man and two children playing a grass trumpet

No.25 make a grass trumpet

A blade of grass makes an amazing noise when you know what to do with it. You could even start your own grass band with your friends.

A young family bird watching

No.44 go bird watching

If you can find somewhere quiet to sit, watch and wait for birds then you'll be spotting them before you know it. Make sure you don't frighten them off, birds get spooked pretty easily.

Children splashing in the rain

6. Run around in the rain

Put your hood up, pull on your wellies and splash through puddles. Even rainy days can be fun!

Hughenden Bug Hunting 1

31. Hunt for bugs

The gardens, parkland and countryside here are rich in wildlife, but they’re not always easy to find. Bring a magnifying glass and search under stones and fallen branches, or on the bark of a fallen log. We leave logs on the ground deliberately to make homes for the bugs.

Boy flying a kite at Sheffield Park East Sussex

No.7 Fly a kite

If there's a little bit of wind then it's kite flying weather - feel it pull away from you into the sky. Can you keep it in the air and not get the string tangled? It takes skill to be a champion kite flyer.

Family catcching leaves

33. Catch a falling leaf

Autumn is the best time of year to catch falling leaves when there are plenty of leaves on the trees. You’ll often see them floating about on the wind.

Apple picking

9. Eat an apple straight from a tree

You can try one of over 40 varieties of apple in our orchard and sample some delicious products in our autumn festival event. Take some home and make your own apple juice or even bake an apple crumble. Please make sure you don’t eat raw cooking apples though, they can give you tummy ache.
