Walks, tours and living history

Step back to the 1930s at Ickworth

There's nothing like holly, ivy and mistletoe to give your home that festive touch this Christmas. Join us on special 'greenery gathering' walks and collect natural decoration from our parkland to take home. Back inside, enjoy a close up look at some of our finest paintings by artists such as Titian, Kauffman and Durer with guided tours using special 'magic torches' that cut through the varnish to reveal the artistry and stories behind them. On one whole special living history weekend on 3 and 4 December, transport yourself back to the 1930s as the staff of the time cook up a feast for the resident Hervey family and get ready for the Servants’ ball.   A special treat this year is a Christmas audio tour – hear the voices of those who had worked here in the 1930s telling their stories in their own words, and now preserved for the future.

Workshops and Christmas crafting for grown ups

Give your Christmas the personal touch with our wreath-making workshops

Delight your family and have a fun day out making your Christmas pudding and mince pies with the help of our living history cooks. This is an exclusive workshop held in in our historic basement kitchen and servants rooms using traditional methods.

How about making a festive wreath for your front door? Join our garden team on a wreath making workshop - see how it’s done, then spend the day making your own with breaks for delicious treats and lunch. And we've a whole crafting week for adults from Saturday 26 November to Friday 2 December.  Whatever the session, you'll be sitting in the cosy and festive comfort of our gallery with all the materials and help you need to make a variety of beautiful crafts and Christmas cards.

Family Christmas Sparkle

Father Christmas is in residence at Ickworth throughout the Christmas season

It wouldn't be Christmas without Father Christmas. Of course he’ll be the star of our traditional Family Christmas ‘Sparkle’, telling stories and sharing gifts around the fireside. There’ll be traditional games, fun crafts for the whole family to make, and all sorts of tasty seasonal snacks in our café. This year we have two full Friday-to-Sunday weekends on 9-11 and 16-18 December before Father Christmas leaves us to get ready for the big day. But don't despair - we'll have crafts for the kids running every day (except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day) until 1 January 2017.
