Smell the wild garlic at Ilam Park
Wild garlic carpets some parts of Ilam Park in the spring and summer months, providing a striking fragrance to the woodland walks.
Along with arrival of spring lambs and the return of the swallows to nest at Ilam Park, wild garlic is a popular sight (and smell) at this time of year. You'll find carpets of wild garlic bordering the woodland walks and Paradise Walk, offering a sensory walk for visitors of all ages.
The wild garlic starts growing in late January and into February you can spot the bright green leaves emerging beside the River Manifold and in Hinkley Wood. In April and May the delicate white flowers turn the display into a white carpet of woodland floor cover.
