What’s happening with the parking at Knole?
We are sorry that parking at Knole has been difficult over the past few months. We are working hard to make improvements. We also want to keep you up to date with accurate information.
An extended period of wet weather over the winter has regularly made around half our car park unsuitable for use. At times we have unfortunately had to close the driveway to cars to prevent blockages and traffic on Sevenoaks High Street.
At these times, we tend to close the car park for 45 minutes to an hour to free up a lot of spaces and avoid queues on the drive and into town. This also allows us to ease congestion onsite and reduce the queues in our busy café. We have tried re-opening the car park as soon as a few spaces free up, but have found that we have to close again almost straight away.
If you are thinking of driving to Knole, please check our website for the latest parking information first. All updates will be posted in the red note at the top of the website.
To avoid congestion it’s best to visit outside our peak times - between 11am and 2pm, especially at weekends. Arrive earlier or later in the day when the house, café and parkland will be less busy and look particularly tranquil.
Alternatively, there are several car parks in Sevenoaks if you would like to walk in to the parkland. Knole’s main entrance is a five-minute walk away or you can enter the park via Webbs Alley behind the High Street.
So what are we doing to improve things?
You may have spotted our team in the car park recently carrying out maintenance work. The car park is also currently being redesigned and we expect works to start later this year.
The roadways will be wider and resurfaced with crushed ragstone to keep them dry year-round, which means we will be able to use more of the spaces even when the bad weather hits. Access will be easier and a clear one-way system will signpost exactly where to park.
Until then, please bear with us and don’t forget to check the website for updated parking information before visiting our beautiful house and grounds.
