The Lakes appeal

Help to look after the landscape, culture and wildlife of the Lakes, so people can find freedom, fresh air and the enriching experience of nature here forever.

The Great Gift of Freedom

After the end of the First World War, Scafell Pike, Great Gable and 12 other summits in the Lake District were gifted to the National Trust to commemorate those who had fallen. In 2018 for the centenary of the end of the War, we’re rebuilding the memorial cairn on the summit of Scafell Pike. And we’re asking for your help, to look after the places special to you in the Lakes.

How the appeal adds up

  • After the Great War 14 summits were given in memory of the fallen
  • Thanks to donations and legacies we now care for over 20% of the National Park
  • We need your help to raise £1million each year to look after the Lakes

Enjoy the freedom of the Lakes today

In 2017 the Lake District was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status, recognising this place as a globally significant cultural landscape. This film produced by Terry Abraham, features Scafell summit and the many places we care for today.

Why give to the National Trust?

As a charity, we rely on the generosity of supporters to look after the outdoor spaces in our care. Not only do our supporters help to conserve beautiful landscapes and protect precious plants and wildlife. But they also ensure that future generations have places they can find freedom from everyday life, reconnect with the natural world and make memories to treasure. Your donation will go towards this project and other vital conservation work in the outdoors at this special place. With your support, we can continue to protect the irreplaceable. For ever, for everyone.
