'Inside Out' Exhibition

An exhibition of paintings, ceramics and sculpture with references to Leith Hill Place, the people connected with it and the landscape that surrounds it.

Karen Pearson and Reiko Evans are professional artists living and working on Leith Hill in Surrey. Their first exhibtion at Leith Hill Place, 'Inside Out' explores the interface between indoor creative arts and the creation of the natural world. The exhibition will be open Friday-Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays 4-28 May from 11am-5pm. Normal admission charges to Leith Hill Place apply.

About the artists

Reiko Evans originally came from Tokyo, where she met her English husband who brought her to live within the Surrey Hills. She has a small studio on Leith Hill, which provides a really beautiful and quiet place to work. Her main work is wheel-thrown pottery using porcelain, stoneware and earthenware.

I love the throwing process, it is both inspiring and exciting, particularly as I’m now including Japanese Kimono patterns into my work. These patterns provide memories of my Japanese family life and particularly my mother.
- Reiko Evans

Reiko creates her own paper stencils, reflecting the Kimono patterns into the greenware and then fires the work at 1000 °C to produce the bisqueware. The bisqueware is either glazed to off white or a semi-lucent colour to enhance these patterns.

Karen Pearson is an experienced local painter, sculptor, and a tutor of painting and drawing both here and abroad.  Her work is inspired by the magic of the natural world, moments in time and the richness of life that surrounds us. Her paintings often capture the ever changing qualities of light and colour, bringing an exciting depth to the work.

Karen can often be seen out and about with her Golden Retriever, armed with sketchbook and paints, in the areas that surround Leith Hill Place as much of her work is completed en plein air in order to capture the 'immediacy of the moment and freshness of observation'.

She is also a tutor for Art Safari, which involves leading and  teaching groups of artists on painting holidays in the UK and abroad. These trips are enriching on many levels, and the experiences, observations and insight that she gets from them often feed back into her work.

Initially Karen was self taught but was lucky enough to be mentored by Ken Ray, Farnham, for several years. She achieved a full distinction in HND Fine Art, then went on to attain a BA (Hons) Fine Art Sculpture at Wimbledon College of Art (University of the Arts London 2013)

For a succession of years, Karen has exhibited and sold with The Society of Women Artists & the Threadneedle Prize Exhibition at the Mall Galleries, and also with The Society of Botanical Artists at Westminster Central Hall, and at the Llewellyn Alexander Gallery, London. She is a former member of The Society of Floral Painters and Surrey Figurative Artists. Her work is held in collections both here and abroad.

Karen lives and works alongside Reiko at the Clock Tower Studios on Leith Hill.
