October half term on the Isle of Wight

There are lots of great things to do in autumn, and this half term we have plenty of ways to try them. Why not have a go at all the autumnal '50 things to do before you’re 11¾', or head along to Bembridge Windmill and put your tree ID skills to the test? Up at the Needles Battery you can hear terrible tales from the sea for some pre-Halloween scary fun. There’s no chance of getting bored this holiday. And with every berry you nibble, you’re helping to provide food for endangered red squirrels.

Tree and Hedgerow ID Trail

Sat 20-Sun 21 Oct. 10.30am-5pm. As the cooler weather changes the hedgerows and trees to deep reds and rich golds, young explorers can follow the boards around the grounds of Bembridge Windmill and discover some fascinating facts about what grows here with our free self-guided trail. You'll find out lots of info in just half an hour but you're welcome to take as long as you want. After your visit, why not explore the lanes and fields around the windmill and see if you can put your new ID skills to use (and maybe eat some blackberries too)?

We're going on an Isle of Wight Bear Hunt

Sat 20 & Sun 21 Oct. Have you ever wanted to go on a real life bear hunt? This autumn, as part of the Isle of Wight Children’s Literary Festival, the whole family can bring the book to life as they hunt for the hidden bear around the grounds of Northwood House.

A tall ship against a blue sky

Ahoy me hearties!

Wed 24 & Thurs 25 Oct 11am-3pm. Up at the Needles Old Battery, little adventurers can join some salty seadogs in tales of swashbuckling adventure and daring do. As the waves crash against the rocks below and the winds whistle around the cannons, young pirates-to-be can gather around for tales of how the waters beneath are a graveyard for ships. You can even put your pirate skills to the test by making your own ship - but how long will it stay afloat?

Autumn 50 things activities

Autumn is a great time to try some of your 50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾, and on the Island we have some of the best places to do them. You could catch a falling leaf in Borthwood Copse (No. 33), or pick blackberries from the hedgerows on Mottistone Estate (No. 21). At Newtown, the hides are a great place to go bird watching (No. 44), and if you’re feeling brave, the waves at Compton may just be warm enough to jump over (No. 20). With woodlands, coast and downland to explore, you’ll soon have them all ticked off.
