October half-term on the Isle of Wight

There are lots of great things to do in autumn, and this half-term we have plenty of ways to try them. Why not have a go at all the autumnal 50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾, or head along to Bembridge Windmill and identify seasonal wild fruit to eat (and some to avoid)? Up at the Needles Battery you can hear terrible tales from the sea for some pre-Hallowe’en scary fun. There’s no chance of getting bored this holiday. And with every berry you nibble, you’re helping to provide food for endangered red squirrels.

Autumnal ID

Young explorers to Bembridge Windmill can find out about the colourful fruits, seeds and berries that fill the hedgerows and trees in autumn. From Sat 21 until Sun 29 Oct (10.30am-4.30pm), follow the boards, discover some fascinating facts and test your knowledge with our free self-guided trail. You'll find out lots of info in just half an hour but you're welcome to take as long as you want. After your visit, why not explore the lanes and fields around the windmill and see if you can use your new skills to find any (and maybe eat some blackberries too)?

Ahoy me hearties!

Join some salty seadogs at the Needles Old Battery this half-term (Tues 24-Thurs 26 Oct, 11am-3pm) and discover tales of swashbuckling adventure and daring do. As the waves crash against the rocks below and the winds whistle around the cannons, young adventurers can gather around for tales of how the waters beneath are a graveyard for ships. Then pit your wits against our games and activities and see if you have what it takes to be a pirate.

Bird watching

Bird Race at Newtown

We need you to find as many birds as possible this half-term at Newtown (Thurs 26 Oct 9am-12.30pm, booking essential on 01983 741020). Bring the whole family along to make up your team and then spend the morning in the woods, meadows and estuary listening and looking as hard as you can. Don’t worry if you don’t know anything about birds – our experts will join in and help you out. But will your team be the one to win the race? Warm drinks and sweet snacks included.

Autumn 50 things activities

Autumn is a great time to try some of your 50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾, and on the Island we have some of the best places to do them. You could catch a falling leaf in Borthwood Copse (No. 33), or pick blackberries from the hedgerows on Mottistone Estate (No. 21). At Newtown, the hides are a great place to go bird watching (No. 44), and if you’re feeling brave, the waves at Compton may just be warm enough to jump over (No. 20). With woodlands, coast and downland to explore, you’ll soon have them all ticked off.
