Doone Valley circular walk and ride from Cloud Farm Campsite

A long but peaceful circuit of the valley made famous by R.D. Blackmore novel Lorna Doone. The route includes woodland and riverside sections and takes in the site of a medieval village and a memorial to Blackmore.

Start point

Cloud Farm Campsite, grid ref SS793477

Step 1

From the campsite, go down to the river and cross over the footbridge. Turn left to follow the bridleway for around 1.2 miles (2km), passing the memorial to Lorna Doone author R.D.Blackmore and then heading through Badgworthy Wood until you reach the site of the medieval village of Badgworthy.

Step 2

From here, follow the bridleway round to the right and up over Brendon Common for 1.2 miles (2km) until you reach a crossroads.

Step 3

At the crossroads, take the right-hand path signposted to Malmsmead and continue for around 1.2 miles (2km) until the bridleway reaches the road.

Step 4

When you reach the road, turn left.

Step 5

Continue up the road for about 200m until you reach a bridleway on your right. Follow this into Southern Wood and through the woodland.

Step 6

When you reach the road, turn right and follow it up the hill. Continue along the road for about 400m until you reach a bend with a bridleway marked 'Badgworthy Valley' on your left.

Step 7

Follow this bridleway upriver for about half a mile (1km), keeping the river on your left until you reach a footbridge. Cross over the bridge to get back to Cloud Farm Campsite.
