The fragrant orchid certainly lives up to its name. If you take a walk on the Commons on a summer's evening, you can smell its sweet, strong, orangery aroma.
The pink flowers of this robust orchid can be seen during June and July. The flowers cluster together to form densely packed flower spikes.
Getting the balance right
Managing the Commons to help this orchid thrive is a difficult balancing act. It likes the dry, unimproved grassland on calcareous soil that the Commons are known for. It's important that we get the grazing just right so scrub doesn't take over, smoothering the fragrant orchid. Over-grazing of an area will also threathen the orchid so it's crucial that we find the right balance.
