Winter at Mompesson House

Different brushes used for cleaning

Over the next few months we'll be thoroughly cleaning the ground floor rooms and carrying out essential conservation work.

We inspect and clean each room from top to bottom. This involves checking the condition of every object, looking for any signs of general deteoriation, before thoroughly cleaning it using specialist brushes and museum vacuum cleaners. Objects are then covered in dustsheets or acid-free tissue paper depending on their size to keep them dust-free until we open again in March. Every winter our Conservation Assistants and volunteers check and clean around 2,000 objects including 385 ceramics, 131 pieces of furniture and 160 paintings and drawings.

You can read about our Conservation Assistant Kate's experience of the winter clean in her blog post from last year here.
