A glittering Elizabethan Renaissance masterpiece, a place that must have seemed wonderful beyond the dreams of those who lived nearby.
An Elizabethan courtier no longer needed to defend his castle, but could build a house as a symbol of power and a statement of wealth. Facing east and situated close to the Ilchester – Ham Hill public road, Sir Edward Phelips displayed his splendid house of stone and glass to the outside world.
