Restoring Maud Russell's Mottisfont

A detail of Rex Whistler's murals in the saloon at Mottisfont, Hampshire

We're launching an appeal to restore and refresh some of the original design schemes created by Maud Russell, using new research carried out by specialist curators.

When Mrs Russell came to Mottisfont in the 1930s, the house was in a state of disrepair. Under her guidance, rooms were reconfigured and redecorated in unique and beautiful styles.

But time has taken its toll on our special interiors, including the extraordinary Whistler Room.

Created by the artist Rex Whistler before he was killed in action in World War Two, the Whistler Room provided the perfect backdrop for Mottisfont's glamorous guests. Its precious curtains, marked with Rex’s own brush strokes, will be one of the items we plan to restore with your help.

If you'd like to donate, simply buy a raffle ticket on your next visit to Mottisfont, purchase something from our second-hand bookshop - or just pop some of your spare change into one of our donation boxes.

Thank you.
