Flights of Fancy: the Wondrous World of Quentin Blake
Leap into a fantasy world with a new exhibition of the work of legendary illustrator, Sir Quentin Blake, at Nymans. Exhibition and programme of activities begins 26 October 2019 and runs until 19 April 2020.
Kindly on loan from Sir Quentin’s archive, the exhibition features illustrations from his self-penned stories, including the joyful antics of ‘The Story of the Dancing Frog’ and voyages of imagination in ‘The Green Ship’. There is also a chance to find out more about how Quentin draws, with a recreation of his studio and an opportunity to practise your drawing technique.
Over Christmas, we’re taking inspiration from ‘The Story of the Dancing Frog’ with a chorus line of froggy sculptures stepping out in the garden, created especially for Nymans in conjunction with Wild in Art, our partners in last year’s popular The Snowman and the SnowdogTM trail. In the gallery, the festive fun continues with some seasonal pieces from Quentin’s illustrations for an edition of A Christmas Carol.
Wellness events & activities
Also featuring are some of Quentin’s works for hospitals and healthcare settings, including illustrations from ‘Welcome to Planet Zog’, for the Alexandra Avenue Health and Social Care Centre, Harrow and the ‘Ordinary Life’ series, created for the Vincent Square Eating Disorders Unit, London. In the New Year, these beautiful and sensitive illustrations are accompanied by a series of events and activities on a theme of ‘wellness’, including taster sessions for activities known to support wellbeing.
The Gallery is situated on the first floor and can only be accessed by a staircase with a single handrail. Some of Quentin Blake's art in hospital work will be on view in the house which has level access.
