Bring your group to Ormesby Hall to discover this beautiful historic house, located on the outskirts of Middlesbrough. You can explore at your own pace or book a guided tour with our knowledgeable guides. Whether you’re visiting for a whole day, half a day or just a few hours, we have plenty for you to see and do.
Inside the friendly, intimate eighteenth century family home you will hear the stories of the Pennyman family who lived at Ormesby Hall for over 400 years. From the scandalous Wicked Sir James, to the last Pennymans Jim and Ruth, him a conservative who fought in the the First World War and Ruth an arts loving socialist, complete opposites who fell in in love, married and lived as equals. Then visit the servants’ quarters with complete Victorian Kitchen and Laundry, and upstairs is the surprise attraction of three permanent model railway layouts with running railway and model villages.
Take a stroll through the formal gardens full of seasonal colours, with stunning floral displays throughout the year, from the snowdrops in spring to the blue borders of delphiniums and agapanthuses’ in the summer. For a more energetic stroll you can venture into the parkland, walking through the tenanted farmers’ fields to see the whole of the Ormesby Hall estate.
Planning your visit
We would recommend that you allow at least 3 hours for your visit.
Coach parking is available 50 yards from the main entrance.
Group visits are available Sunday - Thursday. Please note there is limited availability and group visits must be booked in advance.

We have a small tea-room in the old servants’ hall, but can make additional arrangements for larger groups

On board coach welcome
A member of our visitor reception team will meet you on board your coach to welcome you, let you know what you can see and do that day and give you information to help you make the most of your visit.
A member of our visitor reception team will meet your group at the front of the hall and give you a 10 minute introductory talk on the history of Ormesby to set the scene for your visit.
Special interest tours
Enjoy a volunteer led guided tour of the house to hear the family stories and discover more about the collections at Ormesby Hall.
Join the conservation team as they can take you for a peek inside the drawers, and show you the work they do behind the scenes.
We can also arrange specialist talks in the model railway layouts or garden.
There’s an additional charge of £1.50 per person for guided tours.
A bite to eat..
Enjoy light refreshments such as soup, sandwiches, cakes, scones and a selection of hot and cold drinks. There is seating for 24 people indoors with much more on the garden terrace and in the courtyard. Additional arrangements can be pre booked for larger groups.
When you arrive...
- Please follow the brown signs for the coach parking entrance and then follow the signs for coaches and deliveries
- Your group will be met and welcomed on-board your coach by one of our visitor reception team
- Get your tickets or show your membership cards to a member of the visitor reception team
- Enjoy your pre-booked talk (optional)
- Visit our tearoom in small groups please (there are only 24 seats inside)
- Look around the house and garden at your own pace, if you haven’t booked a guided tour
