We are looking for more volunteers to join the team and help us look after Ormesby Hall and it's beautiful gardens. Whether your interest lies inside or out, there are many varied roles available.

Do you love visiting Ormesby Hall or want to get involved with the work the National Trust does? Then why not become a volunteer?

We have a friendly, enthusiastic team of volunteers who help us care for and bring this historic estate to life. From sharing the stories of the Pennyman family with visitors, working alongside the Senior Gardener to create the picturesque formal garden or running and maintaing the three permanent model railway layouts to giving visitors a much needed cuppa in our shop and supporting our conservation work behind the scenes; we're sure we have a role suitable for you!

Our volunteers come from all walks of life with some looking to keep busy after retiring ,others want to try something different whilst still working to students wanting to get some work experience subsequently enhancing their CV.

Whatever your motivation, we'll seek to ensure you get the most out of the time you donate to us.

What roles are available?


Help the conservation team in this important role caring for our collections and keeping the house looking its best for future visitors.

Room Guides

Share the history of the house and stories of the Pennyman family who lived here for over 400 years as a Room Guide. This role is within the mansion engaging with visitors by offering a warm welcome, answering their questions and directing visitors.

Retail & Catering

Join the shop team and volunteer in the exciting new shop located in the old servants hall. You will help visitors find a memento of their visit as they peruse the shelves and serve them some well earned refreshments.

Second hand book shop

Join the second hand book team and help make our new, bigger space a success and somewhere visitors can relax as they browse our donated books. You will be responsible for sorting new donations, re-stocking and keeping the shelves tidy.

Model Railway Group

Are you interested in the minature world of model railways, then join the Ormesby Hall model railway group who meet weekly to maitain the three permanent layouts in the old servants wing. The volunteers also run the trains much to the delight of visitors on the open days.


Costumed Engagement

Do you like getting dressed up? Then join the team and become a Victorian servant and bring history to life for visitors with stories and hands on activities so they can experience the life of a Victorian servant themselves.


If you like variety then being an events vounteer provides that, as we have a different programme of events each school holiday for families. Volunteers supervise the events and help families to make sure they have an enjoyable time.

Weddings volunteers

Assist the Weddings Manager to make the perfect day for couples and ensure guests are having a good time. You will help direct guests, and support with the ceremonies and receptions.
