October half term at Petworth House and Park

A young girl enjoying the autumn leaves dressed as a witch for Halloween

Visit Petworth this October half term and take part in some spine tingling activities. Take part in the hair-raising trail and solve creepy clues around the Pleasure Grounds or dress to distress and make spook-tastic craft to take home on one of our drop in craft days.

Elizabeth Ilive's Hair-raising Laboratory Trail

20 October - 28 October

Elizabeth Ilive's science experiment has gone horribly wrong and she needs your help.

She was trying to power machinery by catching lightning on a stormy night but the lightning crashed in to the Pet Graves and something not so cute and fluffy has woken up.

This October half term, journey around the Pleasure Grounds and see if you can piece together what has happened.

Meet in the Estate Offices to set the scene with spooky story.

Rather than looking for trail boards, you are looking for scenes. Can you find where the experiment went wrong? Can you find the Pet Graves where something might have woken up and the scenes of destruction in the Pleasure Grounds?

There might be evidence of chewed up easels, and what's scared all the bats from their trees? Find the scenes and answer the questions on the trail sheet to complete this terrifying trail.

Living at Petworth from the 1780s, Elizabeth Ilive built a laboratory at Petworth House and she was no stranger to experiments. Find out what happened on her accidental experiment and follow the story to the end to see how Elizabeth fixes things.

After finishing your trail pick up your prize from Church Lodge or the Car Park Reception.

Running from 20 October to 28 October, pick up your trail from the Car Park or Church Lodge Reception.

The trail around the Pleasure Grounds is suitable for children aged 5 and upward and is accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs however there are some steep hills.

Trails are £3 and normal admission prices apply.

Halloween Crafts

23, 24 and 25 October

Dress to distress at Petworth House and Park and have a go at making some creepy craft to take home.

On Tuesday 23, Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25, drop in to the Orientation Point in the Pleasure Grounds between 11am and 4pm and let your creativity run wild.

Surrounded by all sorts of spooky decorations between 1pm to 3pm there is fearsome facepainting and you can get yourself a temporary tattoo for an additional charge.

There are colouring sheets available as well as menacing monster shapes to decorate.

If you're after a Halloween masterclass then have a go at making a pumpkin garland, paper jack o'lantern, a hanging bat or a yarn wrapped mummy.

£2 per child and normal admission prices apply.

Spot the Bats

Replacing 'Spot the spaniel', for the whole of half-term look out for cuddly bats roosting in Petworth House. Find them all and get a sticker reward. You can even give one of our adorable bats a new home and purchase one from the Gift Shop.
