The National Trust is celebrating festive traditions by helping Father Christmas prepare for the season with some amazing locations for his grottos. From ancient castles and Tudor houses to woodland hideaways and even a ‘reverse grotto’ at Erdigg - there is something magical for everyone.

Enjoy a festive family day out at some of the Trust’s most stunning places where you can get into the Christmas spirit by exploring enchanting trails, making sparkly decorations and of course, telling Father Christmas your secret wishes.

Every visit helps make sure the National Trust can protect special places for many Christmases to come. 

Here are the National Trust’s best grottos and activities to get you in the festive spirit:

South West 


Stourhead, Wiltshire 
Storytelling and presents with Father Christmas, Weekends between 2 – 17 December, 11am-2pm

Father Christmas tells a magical story and shares presents with all the children in his festive grotto. While there, you can also enjoy a host of seasonal family activities.

Saltram, Devon
Storytime with Father Christmas Daily from 30 November – 23 December (excluding Tues & Weds), 3pm, 4pm, 5pm and 6pm

Have you ever wondered what the Little Mermaid asked for at Christmas? Sit down and join Father Christmas in the stables as he shares magical stories of what some of his fairytale friends got for Christmas.

Lacock, Wiltshire 
An audience with Father Christmas, 30 November - 31 December, 11am - 4pm

Get into the Christmas spirit at Lacock Abbey with a festive family trail, plus the chance to meet Father Christmas. You can also make a trip to their annual Christmas tree festival in the abbey cloister and ogle at the traditional decorations adorning the Great Hall.

London and the South East


Standen, West Sussex
Woodland Santa, Weekends between 2 – 17 December, then daily 21 – 23 December, times vary 

Not all Santa’s Grottos have to be indoors. Visit Standen this December to join Father Christmas in his woodland home and hear a magical story. Enjoy a warming cup of hot chocolate as you hear a magical story and receive an early Christmas gift.

Hatchlands, Surrey
Christmas at Hatchlands, Weekends between 2 – 17 December, 11am – 3pm 

The courtyard at Hatchlands becomes a festive feast for the eyes in December, not forgetting the all-important pit stop for Father Christmas. Plus on 16 December join in an evening of Christmas music with soprano Mary-Jess Leaverland.

Sutton House and Breaker’s Yard

Sutton House celebrates its uniqueness all year round, and Christmas is no different. Bring the whole family for a seasonal adventure through the house leading to Father Christmas in his East London grotto.

Ightham Mote, Kent
Mini Christmas market, 2 & 3 Dec, 10am to 3.30pm (Father Christmas 11am to 2.30pm)

Ightham Mote hosts a selection of local Christmas stalls to stock up on special festive gifts. There will be music and a chance to visit the house dressed for a late Victorian Christmas with an American twist. Children can get stuck into craft activities and tackle our seasonal trail. For those who’ve been extra good, there’s a chance to say hello to Father Christmas.

Wicken Fen, Cambridgeshire 
Father Christmas at the Fen, Weekends from the 3 – 23 December, timed sessions throughout the day

Enjoy a traditional family Christmas at Wicken Fen. Bring the little ones to visit Father Christmas who will be taking up residence in the historic Fen Cottage.

Father Christmas loves Oxburgh so much he has agreed to return for another year before his Christmas rush begins. His elves, who with your help care for Oxburgh all year round, have decorated the King’s Room especially for his arrival.

Clumber Park., Nottinghamshire

Gather round in a cosy setting of the Hawkins Study to hear tales from Father Christmas. Each child will receive a small gift from the jolly red man.

Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire
Father Christmas’ Grotto, Weekends between 2 Dec – 17 Dec, 11am-3pm  

Father Christmas will be visiting Kedleston Hall this year in his magical Christmas Grotto, full of craft activities to enjoy. There will also be a signing Father Christmas for children who are deaf at special sessions. Derby has one of the largest deaf communities outside London so the team at Kedleston felt it was important to make their Christmas offer accessible to everyone.

Seaton Delaval Hall, Northumberland

Father Christmas is making his annual visit to Seaton Delaval Hall.  Visit the magical grotto to meet him and receive a special gift, plus enjoy festive storytelling with the elves and warm up with a hot chocolate.

Washington Old Hall, Tyne & Wear 
Meet the Green Man, 16, 17, 22, 23 & 24 December, 11am – 4pm 

The team at Washington Old Hall are welcoming the Green Man for the second year as they celebrate the winter solstice. In pagan times parents would take their children to the woods to meet the Green Man and if they’d been good they’d be given a blessing. Now you can meet him this Christmas at Washington Old Hall.

Chirk Castle, Wrexham

Come along to Chirk Castle’s Medieval Christmas, and enjoy their traditional grotto. Meet Mother Christmas, take an ‘elfie-selfie’, then join Father Christmas for a magical experience (don’t forget to bring along your wish letter!) and receive a special Christmas gift.

Santa and Mrs Claus are looking forward to meeting all of the good boys and girls this Christmas when they come to stay in Castle Ward House. Meet Santa’s elves and enjoy a visit to Mrs Claus in her kitchen before listening to a story from Santa. There will be some tasty treats for all of the visitors.
