Roseberry Romp running trail

Running trail

The route's varied terrain includes winding woodland paths, magnificent views, tough ascents and fast descents.

The only way is up (and back down)

With around 320m of climb, this is definitely a route for runners who enjoy a challenge.

Start:

Newton-under-Roseberry car park, TS9 6QR. Grid ref: NZ570128

1

Exit the car park via the footpath at the village end. Turn right and start at the gate at the bottom of Roseberry Lane. Head straight up the lane and go through the kissing gate into the wood.

2

Once in the wood turn immediately right and follow the bottom path ignoring all paths to the left until you emerge from the woods onto a track.

3

Turn left on the track, then immediately fork left to take the narrow path to the left of the National Trust sign. Follow this path until you reach an old metal kissing gate.

4

Bear left to follow the path that climbs up through the wood. Cross the stile at the top of the path and turn left. Cross another stile and turn right. Do not cross the next stile, but turn left just before it and climb the hill to reach Cliff Rigg Quarry.

5

Follow the path around the edge of the quarry, passing through two gates. Keep the fence on your right as you drop down back into the wood. At the T junction turn right and follow the path along the top edge of the wood.

6

Upon reaching a bench turn right through the kissing gate to begin your ascent to the summit of Roseberry. Pass through a gate at the far side of the field and then bear left up a rough stone path to reach the top.

7

Pause to catch your breath and appreciate the view then take the stone path down from Roseberry Topping. Head for Little Roseberry in front of you. Bear left on the rough path to reach the summit.

8

Continue on the path over the summit and bear left to follow the track down hill. When the path forks take the right hand path and follow it until you reach the gate at the edge of the common.

Do not go through the gate, but cross the stone track and bear left onto the narrow path that continues downhill. When the path forks, bear right each time until you reach a gate. Go through the gate and follow Roseberry Lane back to the start.
