Shopping at Scotney Castle this winter
No visit to Scotney Castle is complete without a browse of the shop and plant centre. Take some time to look at the sale items, new seasonal ranges coming in, decorative items for your home, cards and gift items, as well as local produce, books, plants and outdoor ranges. There's also our range of National Trust souvenirs and gifts. We've got plenty to tempt you; what will you choose?
Embrace the season
As we move on from Christmas and embrace the new year, take some time to browse the sale items and pick up a few bargains. Whether you choose a few cards, festive decorations, tableware or just treat yourself to some Christmas chutney's for the last few bits of cheese and meats at home, there's bound to be a bargain or two to tempt you. Our sale stock doesn't last long, so don't hesitate.
Get outdoors in your garden
The plant centre is stocked with shrubs and perrenials right now, some at 20% off, offering a splash of colour now or for a few weeks ahead. Plant a cornus for it's red stalks, or vibernum for its plump red berries or heuchera for it's delicate veined leaves. You can stock up knowing our plants are sourced from suppliers who grow in peat-free compost too. We've followed this principal for a few years now as we recognise the importance of peat as a carbon store, a great habitat for wildlife and its role in water management.
We've also got plenty of pots, gardening gloves and tools to help you prepare for the season ahead. Our selection of gardening books can provide inspiration and advice for planning your garden too.
Make sure to visit regularly to see what's new on sale; we get new deliveries most weeks.
Scotney's home grown ale
As the only working hop farm in the National Trust and one of the last few in Kent, we're proud to offer for sale pale ale made using hops from Scotney Castle Farm. Viceroy pale ale, Grasshopper ale and Spirit of Kent ale are made using over 50% of hops from our hop farm. You really can't leave without taking a bottle or two home with you.
if you're interested in the hop farm, why not take a walk out towards the hop gardens and the hoppers huts? You can purchase a map from Visitor Reception to guide you out there. Or alternatively, plan to come back during September when we have our Hop Garden Tours and our Hops & Harvest weekend to immerse yourself in the local hop harvest and meet local producers of traditional Kent goods.
Food and drink treats
For something a bit special, then take a look at the food and drink items. From jams and chutneys, to chocolate, sweets and biscuits, plus teas and spirits, there's even a good selection of local produce. If you have a sweet tooth then try the Goupie chocolates, or perhaps the Hive & Keeper local honey. If gin is your thing, then try the Anno Kent Dry Gin, made in nearby Marden, or maybe the toffee and vodka spirit drink. Delicious!
A wonderful souvenir
If you've enjoyed your visit to Scotney Castle, then take a look at our souvenir range of items. Our guidebook is a fantastic way of remembering your visit with us, with great pictures of the house, garden and estate, as well as the history of the people who lived here. Or perhaps something more practical like a Scotney Castle tea towel or mug? There are plenty of Scotney Castle pens, pencils and notebooks too, perfect for our younger visitors who might have a bit of pocket money to spend.
If you're trying to do your bit for the environment and cut down on the amount of waste you generate, then perhaps something from our sustainable range might tempt you. We have stainless steel re-usable straws - a great replacement for paper or plastic ones, ethical and sustainable cleaning products, bee's wrap food storage, re-usable coffee mugs and durable water bottles. Plus some interesting books to help you live a more sustainable lifestyle.
Something for bookworms
The Hussey family had a library packed full of books and we have our own selection within the shop to provide you with a few hours of entertainment or education. Have a browse of the books for kids and adults, covering subjects such as cooking, gardening, National Trust publications and more. You'll also find the odd book on the shelves in fashion, sustainable living and seasonal ranges.
So do take a minute to browse the shop. Every purchase you make helps us with our conservation work within the National Trust and helps us look after special places like Scotney Castle.
