Suffrage on Stage at Smallhythe Place

The seventeenth century Barn Theatre at Smallhythe Place

This event took place in 2018 and is now finished. In celebration of National Trust’s Women and Power programme, here at Smallhythe Place we are exploring and commemorating the stories, works and voices of strong women who fought alongside each other in the battle to gain Women’s rights.

As the only working theatre in the National Trust, we make sure that each year we create a theatre programme which helps keep the theatrical history of the Barn running for years to come.

This year, alongside our Triumphant Women exhibition opening on 5 April 2018 examining the roles of Edy Craig and Ellen Terry, we are hosting a variety of suffrage-themed performances and talks in the Barn Theatre. From new writings and biographical accounts to explorations of the Actresses Franchise League, immerse yourself in our celebrations of the suffrage movement centenary and discover how women helped shape their own history.
