Snowdrops are among the first bulbs to bloom after the winter months, a welcome sign that spring is on the way. Flowering between January and March, spot the first signs of spring and discover the best places to see snowdrops as nature begins to wake at our special places in Wales.

Powis Castle, Welshpool 

Enjoy an elegant display of snowdrops at Powis Castle. Wander down to the bank, near the Bothy in the Formal Garden and you’ll see a variety of this delicate flower. Can you spot the difference between the Galanthus elwesii and Galanthus 'S. Arnott'? Look up towards the daffodil paddock and you’ll see a few Galanthus nivalis - almost impossible to reach but very impressive. Make sure you visit this February.

Snowdrops

Erddig, Wrexham 

Look out for Erddig’s special snowdrop; the double-headed variety, a rare and beautiful treat. Snowdrops appear on the elevated west front of the house with sweeping views of the 1,200-acre estate as a backdrop. Other clusters of the delicate white flower grow in the tea garden, along Moss Walk and in the Rose Garden.

Coed y Bwnydd, Monmouthshire 

Snowdrops are a definite sign that spring is on the way with life returning after the long winter months and land around Clytha Estate in Monmouthshire has been showing just that. For a glimpse of these pretty white flowers poking their heads above the fallen leaves and undergrowth, take a stroll along our Clytha and Coed y Bwnydd walk and see for yourself.

Snowdrops in the Old Park at Bodnant Garden

Bodnant Garden, Conwy 

In early spring snowdrops flourish all around Bodnant Garden but the main display is in the Old Park in February where the meadow is carpeted in white. For the past seven years visitors have been helping gardeners plant an extra 20,000 bulbs every year and you can join in again during half term.

Snowdrops at Penrhyn Castle on a beautiful winter's day

Penrhyn Castle, Gwynedd 

Spring sees Penrhyn’s parkland light up with flowers. Before making your way to the castle, stop off at the Keep. The parkland below is one of the best spots for spring flowers - they almost light up the castle. As you then make your way, you’ll see a sprinkle of snowdrops along the grassland on either side of the road - you could say they’re a carpet inviting you in.

Dyffryn Gardens, Cardiff 

Over the past three years visitors and local schools have helped Dyffryn Gardens plant over 100,000 snowdrops. Come and see them bloom and keep an eye out for all the different varieties this winter.

Snowdrops in pleasure ground wood, Chirk

Chirk Castle, Wrexham 

Snowdrops are one of the many annual floral highlights of Chirk Castle’s award-wining garden. Glimpses of the bulb can be found throughout the garden, scattered between clipped yews, herbaceous borders, shrub and rock gardens. But the best displays are in the Pleasure Ground Wood, which is the formal woodland attached to the formal gardens. Visit Chirk Castle throughout February to enjoy the snowdrop display.

Snowdrops at Colby Woodland Garden, Pembrokeshire

Colby Woodland Garden, Pembrokeshire 

Discover snowdrops at Colby Woodland Gardens from mid to late February. Look for large drifts of snowdrops along the edges of the stream and the east bank, at the bottom of the wildflower meadow and also in clumps in the walled garden.
