December at Souter
Take a break from hectic Christmas preparations, slow the pace and come to Souter. The lighthouse, shop and cafe are open each weekend until 18 December.
Decorations, gift-wrapping and untangling fairy lights can all be put on hold while you enjoy a few hours to relax.
Visit the lighthouse
While some parts of the lighthouse are closed for winter maintenance in December, you can still explore the tower and keeper's cottage. Work off a few mince pies by climbing the 76 steps to the lantern room where you'll be rewarded by a panoramic coastal view.
Every visit helps us pay for the vital conservation work undertaken by staff and a small, dedicated team of volunteers over the winter period.
Wrap up warm and enjoy a bracing walk along The Leas, or follow paths south through Whitburn Coastal Park. Pause at the park's bird hide and spot our feathered friends refueling at the feeding station. Look out for flocks of Snow Buntings overwintering from Scandinavia. With their distinctive snowy plumage, they can be seen feeding on grass seeds at the edges of coastal paths.
Shopping and eating
Thaw out in the Lighthouse Cafe with a hot drink and declicious snack.
And if you still have Christmas shopping to do, we've even got that covered. You'll find cosy blankets ideal for curling up under on wintry evenings, local beers for the real ale lover in your life, festive candles, distinctive decorations, stocking fillers for the kids and loads of seaonal foodie gifts including sweets, biscuits, jams and chutneys.
