Taking outdoor activities to a new level at Souter

A young child at the top of Souter Lighthouse prepares to abseil down the tower

We all feel a little more like getting outdoors and active when the days are longer and warmer. Here at Souter we're embracing that urge.

For starters, we're offering a handful of brave people a rare chance to Tackle the tower, abseilig 76ft down the lighthouse under the expert guidance of outdoor activity specialists Pinpoint Adventure.

It's all for a good cause. After many years' service, the play equipment in the Foghorn Field has seen better days. In fact, you might have noticed that we have recently removed an old favourite, the pirate play ship, due to its state of disrepair. By taking the plunge and raising a minimum of £75 sponsorship, you can help us install new play equipment so families can enjoy adventures a little closer to the ground for years to come.

The event is on Saturday 15 September. Suitable for age 8 and up. No experience necessary, you'll be in safe hands!

We're joining forces with Cullercoats Bike & Kayak to offer two exciting new coastal events this year. Coasteering is the chance for anyone aged 12 or over with a reasonable level of fitness to jump from height, swim and do a bit of bouldering, exploring the coast from a thrilling new angle. Children aged 8-12 can discover rocky shore wildlife and build confidence in the water on an Extreme rockpooling kids-only adventure.

If you prefer to get active with your feet firmly on dry land, Souter's Summer of sport is bigger and better than ever! You'll find free sports activities and taster sessions for all ages every weekday in the Foghorn Field.

On some days we'll be joined by local sports clubs sharing top tips, including Durham Cricket Board, Newcastle Vikings Handball Club and Boldon Netball Club, while regular activities include archery, badminton, orienteering, rounders, tennis and volleyball. We'll be on hand to help you try something new and improve your skills.

In August, Tyne and Wear Sport are bringing a Family Treasure Trail to Souter. An evening of challenges to test your teamwork. Gather friends and family to compete against each other in teams of four as you explore The Leas.

Each Sunday morning, runners of all ages and abilities can tackle a Great Run Local 5k or 2k course around Whitburn Coastal Park. A great start to Sunday, especially if followed by a visit to the Lighthouse Cafe. For route maps and details of how to get inolved, visit the Great Run Local website.
