Black History Month Workshop Facilitator

Sutton House Windrush School Workshops 2018

We are seeking a confident Black History workshop facilitator to plan and deliver Black History Month sessions to Key Stage 1 and 2 school groups throughout October and November. Sutton House is committed to providing engaging and interactive workshops to explore diverse histories. The successful candidate, with our support, will design a workshop around an exhibition we have created about the Windrush Generation, and about some of our own community group members who moved to East London from the Caribbean. The school pupils will learn about immigration, and develop an understanding of the ways immigration has helped to shape London, including long before the Windrush arrived in Essex in 1948.

Brief

The successful candidate will:

  • work with our Community Learning Officer to develop workshops about the SS Empire Windrush and the Windrush Generation for Black History Month, for Key Stages 1 and 2, in response to the materials and exhibition we have prepared
  • deliver workshops to approximately 1400 school students throughout October and November (see below for dates), with the support of volunteers

Experience and knowledge

The successful candidate will have:

  • experience of leading workshops with primary school children as a confident and engaging facilitator
  • experiences of delivering projects relating to African or African-Caribbean heritage
  • the ability to deliver multiple workshops with enthusiasm and passion
  • good knowledge of black history in London, particularly around the Windrush generation
  • A willingness to learn about Sutton House and to be an advocate for the work we do with schools and community groups

Logistics

Dates

  • 1 day to meet with Community Learning Officer in August to view exhibition materials and plan workshops (a fee of £150 will be paid for this day)- date to be determined, but probably in late August
  • 1 October 2018 - 19 October 2018, Monday – Friday 9:00- 15.30, two workshops per day
  • 29 October 2018 - 9 November 2018, Monday – Friday 9:00- 15.30, two workshops per day

Fee

Payment for planning and delivery of the workshops will be £3750 (not including the £150 for the meeting day in August)

  • a plan for an engaging and interactive five minute introduction to year 4 pupils about the SS Empire Windrush
