Destruction caused by the storm

In December 2015, Storm Desmond swept through the North of England. In a record-breaking 24 hours over 300mm of rain fell and the resulting floods caused unprecedented damage. We need your help to protect the Lake District's fragile beauty and strengthen it against future storms.

" I live in the area, and can remember hearing on the news that the storm was coming our way. But nothing could have prepared me for just how much rain we would get, or the extent of the problems it would cause."
- Mike Innerdale, Assistant Director, Operations, Lake District

What your gift could do

  • £20 could help replace a foot of footpath to allow everyone to enjoy the awe-inspiring trails and views the Lake District has to offer
  • £30 could help pay for repairs to stone walls which will make them more flood-resistant to help them stand up to future storms
  • £75 could pay for 25 metres of fencing to help prevent landslips and erosion by protecting the recovering landscapes and strengthening riverbanks

Working together to rebuild the Lakes

Since the floods hit in December 2015, staff and volunteers have been instrumental in helping to rebuild the Lake District. They are now open for business again, but there is still much more work that needs to be completed. Watch our video of volunteers helping to clear the paths.
