The Stubbins Estate walk near Gawthorpe Hall

Experience this countryside trail that circles part of the Stubbins Estate near Ramsbottom in Lancashire. Enjoy views on a clear day of Manchester and the Derbyshire Pennines and pass through Buckden Wood filled with a variety of tree and flower species. Discover part of an old textile factory at The Tentering Tower.

Please note that this trail is on the Stubbins Estate near Ramsbottom, about a 25-minute drive (13 miles) from Gawthorpe Hall itself.

Start point

Red Lees pasture.

Step 1

Start at the bottom of Red Lees pasture.

Step 2

Proceed westwards for approximately half a mile, past Lower Red Lees farm, to the Helmshore Road.

Step 3

From here the route follows Helmshore Road for almost half a mile to the north of Buckden Wood.

Step 4

There is a short descent for another half a mile east through Buckden Wood to The Cliffes.

Step 5

Here the route veers to the south.

Step 6

At the end of Porrit’s Lodge the route passes through a gate on the right and passes the rear of the castellated Tentering Tower.
