Celebrate in 1940s style at Upton House
We invite you to join the celebrations on 6 & 7 August as we re-enact the excitement of a Wartime Wedding Party, with fun for all the family, live music, re-enactors, vintage vehicles and plenty more.
Live Jazz on the lawn
The Swinging Bass band will be playing fantastic live music on the South Lawn throughout the afternoon, setting the tone for a vintage celebration. Bring a picnic, buy yourself some Pimms or Prosecco and enjoy!
They will be keeping the kids entertained with children’s games, testing the skills they would have needed during the Second World War: maybe even recruiting some of them to the home guard! See if they have what it takes and cheer them on as they are put through their paces.
Learn about the 1940s
Between 11.30am and 1pm there will be wedding preparations in the old kitchen. During the war, due to rationing, it would have been hard to put on a good wedding tea. Pop in and see a demonstration of what kinds of things you might have made with your limited ingredients, chat to the cook and have a taste!
A host of guests from the 1940s will be arriving to celebrate with us, including the very special guests: Winston Churchill and his wife Clementine. Meet the famous couple and watch one of Winston’s famous speeches.
And of course: the Bride and Groom will be celebrating their happy day dressed in 1940s style wedding wear. Don’t miss the cutting of the cake in the afternoon, where you can learn the tricks of wartime wedding catering and even have a taste of the wedding cake!
Vintage Tea Dance
On the Saturday afternoon, 4-6pm, there will be a vintage tea dance. The professional dance teachers will guide you through the basics of some real vintage dances and get you up and tapping your toes. Tickets are £15 and pre-booking is essential.
Complete the experience
The popular ‘Banking for Victory’ exhibition will be open in the house, where visitors will be able to find out more about what happened at Upton during the Second World War. Timed tickets can be booked in advance online or picked up on the day on a first come first served basis.
So pop along to Upton House and Gardens on 6-7 August! Normal opening times apply, and normal admission prices apply (except for Tea Dance participants.) Join the National Trust on the day for free entry.
