VE 80 Beacon Lighting
In honour of the 80th anniversary of VE day, join us for the ceremonial lighting of our beacon.
- Booking not needed
- Free event
Dunstable Downs will join communities across the country in marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day with a special beacon lighting ceremony on Thursday 8 May 2025. Following speeches from 9.00pm, the beacon will be lit at 9.30pm alongside others across the UK, Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man, symbolising the ‘light of peace’ that emerged from the darkness of war. After the beacon lighting, communities across the country will join in singing I Vow to Thee, My Country, reflecting on the significance of the day.
Please note that to manage access, the road leading to the Downs will be closed. We encourage you to walk where possible, though a shuttle bus service will be running from 8.30pm-10.30pm. Parking at the Downs will be for Blue Badge holders only.
For those unable to attend, we will be broadcasting a live stream of the event on our Facebook @DunstableDownsNT.
With the focus being on paying tribute to those who secured peace, no additional entertainment or concessions will be on offer, though the National Trust café will serve drinks and cakes.
The event is being produced by BBB Group. Thank you to Dunstable Town Council for their generous grant towards to event, with additional support from South Beds Association of National Trust Members and Whipsnade Parish Council. Without their support, the event would not be possible.
Free, no booking required. It will be dark when you leave so please bring a torch with you.
