The Beatrix Potter Gallery will not be open this year, due to areas of the historic building needing repair work. We've put together a list of frequently asked questions with answers, which we'll update as we understand more about the work that needs to take place.
The Beatrix Potter Gallery will be closed in 2023
After recently carrying out routine maintenance work on part of the roof of the Beatrix Potter Gallery, Hawkshead, we discovered some previously unknown issues concerning the roof slates and interior rendering. After considering the options and recognising the significance and importance of the collection which is to go on display, we have decided to close the Beatrix Potter Gallery for the rest of the year. We are working with specialist heritage contractors to better understand the extent and timescale for the work. Due to this, we don’t yet know when the Gallery will reopen. Regular updates will be given through the National Trust website and social media channels. The care of the building and the significant Beatrix Potter collection remains our main priority. We will look at whether a selection of Beatrix Potter’s original artwork and manuscripts, including a newly acquired letter written by Beatrix Potter herself could go on display at Hill Top later this year. More information to follow on this.
