Award-winning sound artist Una Lee and critically acclaimed a-cappella quartet Landless bring a fusion of cultures, music and language to Mussenden Temple, as they present ‘po(e)sies’ – a bilingual performance work in Korean and English.
The performance invokes the past, preserves the present and points to the future, by reincarnating the ancient Korean poetry form of ‘Hyangga’. While the story of an elderly woman who sings to her flowers is told, a musicalised blossoming calendar of a faraway garden will be breathed back to life in the shape of singing voices, filling the Temple with the hopes, dreams and tears from a thousand years ago.
As a prelude to the performance of this piece, Una Lee will offer readings of Korean poetry, counterpointing Landless’ multilingual tunes, in the spirit of highlighting diverse cultures that already reside within Ireland.
- Artists - Una Lee is an artist of sounds, stories and sensations, in perpetual pursuit of alternative storytelling. She is an Ivor Novello Composers Award nominee, and a former Visiting Scholar at Sonic Arts Research Centre.
Landless is an a-cappella quartet, singing traditional songs from various cultures in close four-part harmony. At this performance, they will be joined by singer Consuelo Breschi, from the folk duo ‘Varo’.
This project is generously supported by PRS Foundation’s Women Make Music and the National Lottery through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
