Windmill Hill morning lecture

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Alexander Keiller's ground breaking excavations at Windmill Hill, join Professor Joshua Pollard and Dr Ros Cleal for a morning talk about the Neolithic roots of the site, through to its influence today.

  • Booking essential

As long ago as the eighteenth-century people recognised that there was an ancient site on Windmill Hill, a mile north-west of Avebury, but it wasn’t until the 1920s that this was investigated. From 1925 – 1929 Alexander Keiller excavated much of the site, and many of his finds still inform our modern understanding of the Neolithic period.

Professor Joshua Pollard, University of Southampton archaeology, and Dr Ros Cleal, National Trust Property Curator, will be holding a morning talk on Friday 23 May to share this fascinating history, including excavations on Windmill Hill, Alexander Keiller and his team in the 1920s, and a small selection of some Neolithic objects from the site. The morning will begin at 10am in the meeting room above Circles Café at National Trust Avebury, and end at 12pm, including a chance to ask questions. Refreshments of tea or coffee plus a bake from the café will be included.
