Sphagnum Harvesting Day
Help us to harvest our homegrown sphagnum moss, ready for planting on the moor this autumn.

- Free event
With the help of Calderdale Council’s Growing Resilience project, we’ve grown different species of Sphagnum moss in our nursery over the summer. We now need to get it ready to be planted back out on the moor.
Sphagnum moss is a key part of moorland restoration here at Marsden. It stores up to 20 times its mass in water, which helps to re-wet the moor and slow the flow of rainwater, improving our resilience to wildfire. As it grows, it absorbs carbon, which is stored on the moor as peat – helping in the fight against climate change too.
This task will be held in our yard so it’s a great way to get involved without having to go out into the elements of the moor!
