Christmas at Winchester City Mill
Christmas at Winchester City Mill: Escape the hustle and bustle of the high street this winter and step into this historic watermill. Decorated with a sparkling tree and pretty window displays, you’ll uncover all sorts of treats, from festive baking and flour milling to carol singing and a new family trail. It's the perfect way to spend a day out with the family at Christmas. Every visit you make directly supports the Mill and helps to keep it open. The Mill is open 15 - 24 December, 10am-4pm (last entry 3:30pm) and closed 25 – 31 December.
There is no additional charge for any of our activities.
Stir-up Sunday Baking Demonstration
Sunday 25 November, 11am – 3pm
In Victorian times, families would gather together in the kitchen of their homes five weeks before Christmas – the last Sunday before Advent - to mix and steam Christmas puddings. This became known as Stir-up Sunday. Here at Winchester City Mill, we’re keeping the tradition alive and holding a Stir-up Sunday baking demonstration.
We'll be baking our usual favourites from 11am but at midday, you can find out how to make a Christmas pudding and make a wish as you stir. Pick up a recipe card, buy some freshly ground Mill flour and have a go at making a pudding yourself when you get home.
Warming Winter Baking Demonstrations
Sunday 9, Saturday 15 & 22 December, 11am – 3pm
Step into the warmth of Winchester City Mill’s kitchen for some festive baking. From buttery mince pies, cakes and festive bread, find all your favourite bakes here. Learn how to make seasonal treats using our delicious stoneground wholemeal flour. Take away our Christmas Celebration Cake recipe card to try out at home.
Christmas Holiday Trail
Saturday 15 – Monday 24 December, 10am - 3pm
Every day this holiday, take a journey through the Mill following the trail of clues left by Father Christmas himself. Older children’s keen eyes will enjoy the challenge of rounding up his herd of reindeer to claim a prize. For younger children, see how many elves you can find sneaking around the Mill.
Alder Valley Brass Christmas Carols
Saturday 15 December, 12am - 3pm
Alder Valley Brass is bringing the cheery sounds of Christmas to the Mill’s courtyard and a chance for everyone to join in with favourite carols. From little ones learning to talk to grown-ups who know the words off by heart, singing along to our brass band is the perfect way to get in the Christmas spirit. We’ll also have warming mince pies and mulled wine for the adults, plus warm apple juice for the children, to keep energy levels topped right up.
