Sitting in an elevated position above the Northern Lakes, you’ll feel like King of the land in this castle. It’s actually a former 18th-century carding mill, but nonetheless impressive. Step inside the turret-adorned property to an atmospheric space with high ceilings and historic detailing in all its nooks and crannies. An intricate stained glass window, open fireplaces and chequered tiled floors are just some of the notable features of this large six bedroom mansion.

It’s ideal for those special get-togethers with its large rambling garden with a pretty pond, perfect for summer soirees. If you’re an outdoorsy bunch, you’ll have direct access to Skiddaw Range with its easily navigational paths and fine views across the Vale of Keswick.  

Also close by is the bustling small town of Keswick, just a 10-minute drive from here. Go a little further south to Derwent Water, also known as ‘Queen of the Lakes’. It’s nestled in the idyllic Borrowdale Valley. You can explore the islands on your own vessel or rent boats from hire centres around the lake.

Ground floor layout

Entrance hall, large dining room with open fire, lavatory, kitchen and adjoining utility room.

First floor layout

Large sitting room with open fire, two bedrooms (one twin connected to one double with an en-suite bathroom with shower) and a further separate shower room with lavatory.

Second floor layout

Second floor: four bedrooms (1 double with en-suite bathroom, 1 double with 5' bed and 2 twins) and bathroom with shower.

Heating: Oil central heating included.

Parking: There are spaces for up to four cars. 

Garden: There is a large enclosed garden. There is a large fenced pond that can be deep at times, numerous streams and becks also run through the garden so care is needed and children should be supervised. 

Guests should expect to see dedicated National Trust Volunteer Gardeners tending the grounds on one or more days during their stay as part of the ongoing programme of maintenance and restoration of the whole gardens.

Television: FreeSat is provided in the lounge and both en-suites.

*WiFi: This is now available, but please note that intermittent connection problems can sometimes occur and should not be relied upon. We are pleased to provide free WiFi at this cottage which is supported by BT.

Please note: There is a traditional open-banister stairwell from the second floor down to the ground floor, children should not be allowed to play on the banisters.
