Working in partnership with the International National Trusts Organisation (INTO) for the third consecutive year, we are delighted to offer new working holidays for 2014.

From gardening in Eastern Europe, archaeology in Spain to castle restoration in France, we hope there’ll be something for you. INTO is the focal point for the worldwide National Trust movement, bringing together many diverse heritage conservation organisations, all the way from Australia to Zanzibar. Rediscovering artefacts in beautiful Galicia, Spain

Dates: 13/07/2014 – 21/07/2014 & 22/07/2014 – 30/07/2014

The holiday: Situated on Galicia’s Northern coast, this site has stunning views of one of the region’s largest beaches and its nearby hills. Castro de Mallou is an impressive Iron Age settlement known for its interesting construction and the remains of a foundry. You will be part of the 2014 programme which aims to prove the existence of a metal workshop and there will be a real-time communication campaign to facilitate local community engagement. With the guidance of an English-speaking local expert, you’ll be involved with practical excavation work, site clearance or ground surveys. There will be the chance to participate in events with local residents and you will have time to visit places of interest in the area.

Accommodation: Shared sleeping areas in a local municipal hall. Participants will need to bring a sleeping bag, pillow and mat.

Bronze and Iron Age archaeology by the beach, Spain

Dates: 03/08/2014 – 11/08/2014

The holiday: Takes place at a unique archaeological site in Mougás on Galicia’s South coast, set in an idyllic landscape. It offers elements from two distinct periods in time: numerous rock engravings from the Bronze Age and a spectacular Iron Age settlement. Now in its third year, the aim of this community project is to clean, document and study the engravings and deepen understanding of maritime settlements and Iron Age commerce. Working with an English-speaking archaeologist, you will learn about the local history and assist with excavation work, clearing vegetation and completing surveys of the site. There will also be the opportunity to explore local beaches and discover the rich history of this fascinating region.

Accommodation: At a local hostel. There is one male and one female dorm, each sleeping 6-8 people. Full bedding and towel provided.

Restoration at Cervený Dvur, Czech Republic

Dates: 29/06/2014 -06/07/2014 & 06/07/2014 – 13/07/2014

The holiday: (age 20+): Situated in Southern Bohemia, Cervený Dvur is an estate which was once the summer residence of the Schwarzenburg family and is now a sanatorium. Participants will work on the restoration of an eighteenth century gardener’s cottage on the estate and help to recreate the formal gardens of the chateau. Tasks involve simple building work and some clearance work around landscape features in the grounds. No prior skills required. During the week there will be the opportunity to visit some of the region’s houses and castles.

Accommodation: Full board and lodging in twin bedrooms in the stable wing of the chateau. Bedding and towel provided.

Live and work in a Slovakian castle, Slovakia

Dates: 03/08/2014 – 16/08/2014 & 17/08/2014 – 30/08/2014

The holiday: Liptovský Hrádok Castle in Northern Slovakia is one of the region’s most beautiful heritage sites and dates back to the 14th century. It has been lovingly restored recently and much of it is now home to a Four Star hotel. The main focus of this working holiday will be on completing simple gardening tasks and everyday maintenance activities in the castle. You will also learn about the castle’s history and occasionally work as a Tour Guide for overseas visitors. The site is compact and there is plenty of opportunity to become familiar with its history and surroundings. Your leisure time could be spent hiking in the mountains or visiting some of the nearby historic towns. We can offer this holiday to couples or two friends booking together.

Accommodation: Twin room in the Four Star hotel on site. Bedding and linen are provided.

Conserving Villognon Ancient Watermill, France

Dates: 28/06/2014 – 13/07/2014 & 16/07/2014 – 31/07/2014 & 19/08/2014 – 02/09/2014

The holiday: (18-25 year olds): Nanteuil-en-Vallée is a charming village in the Charantes region in Western France. Join an international team focussed on the restoration of the beautiful Villognon Ancient Watermill, which is within walking distance of the village. Over the fortnight you have the opportunity to use a number of different techniques: stone masonry, re-pointing, woodworking and landscaping. There will also be time to try some of the many leisure activities planned by your leaders. These holidays are more suitable for 18-25 year olds who have a good level of fitness and a strong wish to integrate into an international team.

Accommodation: Camping in tents that sleep a maximum of four people, with showers and toilets in separate buildings. You will need to bring a sleeping bag, pillow and mattress/mat. Participants will share shopping, cooking and cleaning duties.

Revolutionary rebuild: stone masonry, France

Dates: 17/07/2014 -28/07/2014 & 01/08/2014 – 12/08/2014 & 16/08/2014 – 27/08/2014

The holiday: Budos Castle, situated in Aquitaine in South West France, was built in the early fourteenth century and was severely damaged in the French Revolution more than four centuries later. Nowadays it holds ‘Historic Listed Building’ status and is currently undergoing restoration. You will have the opportunity to learn new skills in stone cutting and traditional masonry techniques under expert guidance to assist with this project. There will also be time to discover the fantastic heritage in the region and enjoy cultural activities planned by the holiday leaders.

Restoring Rochefort Castle, France

Dates: 13/07/2014 -27/07/2014 & 04/08/2014 – 17/08/2014

The holiday: Takes place at the ruined castle of Rochefort, one of the most beautiful castles in Northern Burgundy. Built in the late fifteenth century, it combines various architectural styles including renaissance. Under the guidance of skilled leaders, you will participate in different restoration activities including archaeological surveys and the consolidation of the
retaining walls of the terraces. So be ready to experience traditional masonry! This holiday will also include hiking, tours in the surrounding countryside and swimming pool parties with the local volunteers.

Accommodation: You will stay in a house owned by the association in the village of Asnières-en-Montagne. Showers and toilets are available inside, as well as dormitories. You will need to bring a sleeping bag. Participants will share shopping, cooking and cleaning duties.
