A group on an overseas working holiday

Working in partnership with the International National Trusts Organisation (INTO) for the fourth successive season, we are delighted to offer an expanded selection of working holidays for 2015. Whether it’s archaeology in Spain, saving Renaissance treasures in Slovakia, garden restoration in the Czech Republic or stone-masonry high in the French Alps, we hope there’ll be something for you to enjoy.

INTO is the focal point for the worldwide National Trust movement, bringing together many diverse heritage conservation organisations. More information is available here.

SPAIN
These holidays are run in conjunction with Tesouros de Galicia, a non-profit organisation with a vision to help the recovery of the heritage of North West Spain.

Archaeological Restoration at Travesas Iron Age Hill Fort, Galicia
The working holiday: The remains of the Iron Age Hill Fort in Travesas is one of the most impressive historical sites in the A Coruña region. Covering an area of around 12 acres, it’s considered to be a small town. Its location marks a strategic point on an ancient route (known as the ‘English Way’) connecting the coastal city of A Coruña to the pilgrimage destination of Santiago de Compostela. Objects and artefacts from the British and Mediterranean coasts have been found at the site: a result of its unique history.

Archaeological excavations have been conducted at two of the Hill Fort entrances. These now need to be consolidated to prevent further degradation and prepare the site for public visits. Join us on the first part of a planned three-year programme - restoring the entrance to the main compartment. You’ll be part of an international team and there will be plenty of time to discover the rich heritage of this fascinating region.

Accommodation: Full board at a local hostel in shared rooms. You will need to bring a sleeping bag and pillow.
Dates: 31/08/2015 - 13/09/2015
Price: EUR150 (£112*)
*An approximate GBP £ price based on an exchange rate of 1.3448 on 27 Feb 2015.

Tasks will typically include archaeology excavations in the fort and 3D recording of the unique rock art.
During the holiday there will be plenty of opportunities to get to know Galicia in depth: its people, landscape, gastronomy, fiestas and history.

Accommodation: Full board at a local hostel in shared rooms. All bed linen and towels provided. The hostel provides home cooked meals using fruit and vegetables from their own garden and other locally sourced produce. Private en-suite rooms are available for an additional EUR10 per person, per night.

The working holiday: This is a unique opportunity to leave a footprint on rural village life. Participants will be building a ‘barefoot’ path in front of a village museum in the centre of Zarosice, near Brno, eastern Czech Republic. The work will be predominantly manual – digging and moving earth, laying stones and other construction materials. Everyone will be encouraged to use their creativity and leave a permanent imprint of their individual input. There are many opportunities for leisure and social activities – the museum presents the history of Czech and Moravian rural life and you will be able to try some of the age-old traditions and techniques. Look forward to swimming in a pond within the woods, walks to sites of medieval villages and visiting local craftspeople (blacksmith, potter, wine-maker).
