A natural pier with dramatic cliffs and Victorian fort

Brean Down is a wonderful location for a day out in Somerset. Enjoy relaxing on the beach at the foot of the Down, building sandcastles and visiting the Cove Café for a seaside treat.

Venture to the top of the Down and take the exhilarating 1.5 mile walk along Somerset’s greatest natural pier.

The Down stands 97m high and the views from the top are truly spectacular, looking out over the Bristol Channel towards south Wales and over the Somerset Levels.

Outdoor adventures this summer

50 Things activity days at Cheddar Gorge

If you’re looking for some great places for exploring, then look no further.

Our rangers have planned two days at nearby Cheddar Gorge during the summer holidays packed full of outdoor fun - from hunting for bugs, to getting messy creating some wild art.

Book a place on either 7 or 14 August at Cheddar Gorge by ringing Nicola on 01278 751874. Tickets cost £5 per child, accompanying adults go for free. Spaces are limited and will fill up quickly and the event will start at the National Trust shop.

Brean gets arty

We're working with a group of artists at Brean Down who will be creating art installations at the fort.

The artists, led by Joy and Donna, have been recording and responding to the stories of the people, the landscape and the buildings at Brean Down and hope to form a connection through art, to those who lived and worked at the fort and in the surrounding area. To help us really bring the place to life, visitors will enhance and contribute to the work on display during the exhibitions and the artists will also be running workshops at many of our events planned throughout the year.

The first stages of the project will be revealed at Brean Down during Somerset Art Week 3 - 18 October, with the culmination of the project to follow in 2016.
