A garden for all seasons
Steeped in nearly 300 years of history, this eighteen-century garden is a green oasis in the heart of Surrey within easy reach of London. Once a Dukes’ retreat and a playground for princesses, Claremont has always been somewhere to escape everyday life and enjoy simple pleasures with family and friends.
Many of the great names in garden history played a part in the creation and development of the estate. Over the years Sir John Vanbrugh, Charles Bridgeman, William Kent and ‘Capability’ Brown all put their own distinctive stamp on the pleasure grounds, which were part of the foremost royal residence in the country.
Today there are still many unique and unexpected features to discover, including the large turf amphitheatre, serpentine lake, grotto, Camellia Terrace and Belvedere Tower. Look out for the Thatched Cottage, a Victorian refuge filled with fun toys, games, picnic rugs and dressing up clothes.
We always have something special to offer, from our changing seasonal views to our diverse programme of events for the whole family. Our children’s play area is a great place to run off steam, and no visit would be complete without sampling the tempting array of homemade cakes and light lunches in our café.
Whatever your mood or whoever you’re with, make our garden your sanctuary.
Birds on a diet
After a recent surge in goose numbers we've decided to put them on a strict diet, to discourage new arrivals.
We're asking you to help out by not feeding the birds for the next few weeks. Thank you.
Sat 2 - Sat 9 Aug
We're having a great children's activity week this summer, with a trail, crafts, Rainy Day Bear's Adventure and pony rides.
Roads will be closed in Esher during the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey cycle events on Sunday 9 August.
We're open as normal on the A307 from Cobham.
Visit us through the seasons
When the sun comes out, the lake sparkles and the lush greens that personify Claremont are at their best. Stunning views wherever you look and perfect for a picnic.
Witness a colourful transformation. The leaves blaze into bright oranges and yellows as they prepare to fall, offering a beautiful backdrop to the edge of the lake.
Once all the leaves thin, a clearer view of the garden's beauty can be seen. From December, the Camellia Terrace begins to bloom in a beautiful display for several months.
Spring gets off to a beautiful start with the arrival of the daffodils. Then, later in the season, the azaleas and rhododendrons start to flower, providing flashes of colour amongst the green.
