Try a taste of the dark side

Lindisfarne Castle has launched its own beer, and the key ingredient is hyssop from our very own walled garden.

Inspired by the Castle’s wonderful walled garden designed in 1911 by Gertrude Jekyll, (whose centenary the Trust celebrate this year) it makes use of ‘hyssop’ – an ancient healing herb used by brewers for almost 3,000 years and particularly popular during Elizabethan times. The herb is said to offer a number of vitalising properties and was historically used to help congestion and aid digestion.

At 4.0% ABV, the ale can be enjoyed on its own or with food. It is particularly good with hearty dishes including sausages, roast beef, lamb, game and smoked salmon. It’s also brilliant with sticky toffee pudding!
