The Castle
The Castle
First built in around 1570, this Elizabethan fort saw three centuries of garrison life before being renovated for Edward Hudson by the renowned architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. As the conversion was fairly sympathetic to the Tudor fort, much of the old fort is still visible.

The garden
The garden
Gertrude Jekyll - Lutyens' longtime friend and collaborator - produced a plan for a garden here in 1911. After a period of decline the garden was restored to Gertrude's intended layout in 2002. It is one of very few original Gertrude Jekyll gardens left anywhere and one of the best belonging to the National Trust.

The lime kilns
In the 1860s a huge battery of Lime Kilns were built near the Castle. These are some of the largest of their type anywhere in the country and are being actively protected by the National Trust. We have a PDF leaflet to download here for more information.
