Discover our stories

Let the stories of the people who lived here through eight centuries of rich history tell you how it was transformed from a Medieval priory to a Tudor statesman’s mansion before becoming a comfortable country house.

Conserving our past

We're always working hard to look after our collections

Every day the house team do their regular conservation checks. Daily tasks include looking for pests, checking light levels and delicately cleaning the collection.

Our collections

Derek Hill collection

Painting of Sir Stephen runciman by Derek Hill (191-2000) © Derek Hill

Derek Hill was a talented landscape and portrait artist. He was often to be found at Maud Russell’s house parties and loved Mottisfont so much that in 1995 he gave his collection of 86 paintings to be displayed here.

Refurnishing the interior

A room full of nostalgia of a bygone era- The boys sittingroom, Mottisfont © Elizabeth Isherwood

In the 1970s Maud Russell moved into the village and took many of her possessions to furnish her new home.

What you see today is a collection that's been built to reflect her time here, using photographic evidence to replicate her style.
