Magna Carta Festival of Liberty

 

Monday 15 June 2015

800 years to the day since the sealing of Magna Carta at Runnymede, there will be a celebration here in the meadow. We'll have an official ceremony in the morning, followed by an afternoon of picnics and politics.

Together with Surrey County Council, we've commissioned British artist Hew Locke to produce a new permanent public artwork commemorating Magna Carta. It will be unveiled in the meadow on the day of the anniversary.

Sunday 14 June 2015, 3pm

At 3pm on the day before the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta, there will be a nationwide event. People all across the country will sit down and have tea to celebrate, debate or reflect on their freedoms and rights.

Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 June

Watch as the Queen’s row barge Gloriana leads a flotilla of about 200 craft of all shapes and sizes in a ‘spectacular’ river event along the Thames from Hurley to Runnymede.

Egham Regatta

Sunday 28 June, 8.30am-7.30pm

To mark this important constitutional anniversary, this year you will be able to watch the regatta for free from the meadows. Races will run between Magna Carta Island and Ankerwycke Priory every 3 minutes throughout the day.

As well as all the Magna Carta festivities we'll also be running our usual guided walks throughout the year, along with a Cadbury Easter Egg Trail.

Local celebrations

In recognition of the area's lasting legacy of liberty, there will be a series of local Magna Carta events. Look out for bell ringing, lectures, an exhibition at Egham Museum and more.
