Archetypal 14th century moated castle with ruined interior - a glimpse of medieval splendour

Set in the heart of an historic landscape, with spiral staircases, battlements and a portcullis, 14th century Bodiam Castle is one of Britain's most picturesque and romantic ancient monuments. Windows where arrows were once fired, a tower that was once a look-out and ruins that were once walked upon by knights; this is a place where you can relive your childhood memories and let your imagination run riot.

In the impressive gatehouse is the castle's original wooden portcullis, an extremely rare example of its kind. Enough of the interior ruins survive to give an impression of castle life and gruesome and surprising tales can often be heard from our miller's wife, forester and other colourful characters from the past. Plus we have lots of seasonal events throughout the year.

Mon, Tues & Fri at 2pm : 1.5-2hrs

Weds at 12noon & 2pm : 30-45mins

Join one of our friendly guides to 'Walk and Talk' your way around the castle grounds or the wider Bodiam estate.  We take the walks at a pace to suit the group and there's plenty of stops to admire the views of the castle and surrounding countryside.  Look out for information on additional walks that will be taking place this month, too.

Our theme for this month is Folklore and Fairytales.  Come and hear tales of King Arthur, Life after death and St. George and some dragons from our medieval characters who will be in the castle each day.  They have a wealth of knowledge and would love to pass the time of day with you, even in the rain.

Brave and bold 5-12 year olds can aspire to be like St. George this Hallowe'en and pick up a trail before heading off on a dragon quest to earn a prize.  When they've finished they can have a go at our craft activities or try out our 'Knight's Peril' interactive audio adventure around the castle.

It's 1387 and someone wants Sir Edward Dallingridge dead.  Help his daughter, Kate, discover who before it's too late. Our new interactive audio investigation is an exciting way to explore the castle and help solve a mystery.  Suitable for families, individuals or groups of friends.  Find out more at castle cottage.

Get outdoors this autumn

Autumn is a great time for bug hunting or hiding in a really big tree and claiming a sticker towards your 50 Things to do before you're 11 3/4.  Pick up your adventure scrapbook and have a go at some of the 50 Things activities, and get back to nature.

Hidden away in a tower in the castle, our Crones will be busy selecting and mixing, stirring and brewing a delightful range of concoctions.  Enter if you dare, to listen to their stories but be wary of their unconventional cooking.
