Discover the intriguing history of Clouds Hill, the rural retreat of TE Lawrence until his death in 1935. From extensive tree planting during the 1700s to the families who worked and lived here, learn how this tiny cottage and the surrounding area has a history dating back long before Lawrence of Arabia discovered it and made it his own.

TE Lawrence's retreat

When TE Lawrence first saw the cottage at Clouds Hill in 1923, it was in a state of disrepair. Abandoned and uncared for, it had been empty for almost nine years. The windows had fallen in, there were holes in the roof and not much remained apart from the walls and chimney stack.

The cottage seemed all but a ruin until the man known as Lawrence of Arabia made it his retreat from army life.

A local landmark

The name Clouds Hill applied to the elevated area between Bovington and Turners Puddle and was used as a landmark in some property deeds from the 1730s. The local Lord of the Manor, James Frampton (the elder) of Moreton, was gradually buying up land on Turners Puddle Heath and Bovington Heath.
