Commissioned by Julius Drewe and designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, Castle Drogo in Devon was the last castle to be build in England. It looks like a forbidding medieval fortress, but inside it is a surprisingly comfortable family home full of quirks.

The colourful formal gardens at Castle Drogo are a perfect extension of the castle's strict appearance. Less formal are the grounds, woodland gardens and orchard which are lovely places from which to enjoy the views over Dartmoor and have a picnic.

The Teign gorge and Castle Drogo estate are great places for all sorts of outdoor persuits such as dog walking, mountain biking or wildlife spotting. From Sharptor you can enjoy the amazing views all over Dartmoor and in the valley you will find the beautiful river Teign and some of our ancient trees.

Why not go for a walk to enjoy the natural beauty of the Castle Drogo estate and the Teign Gorge. Ask the staff or volunteers or buy a leaflet showing our estate walks in our shop or in the entrance hall of the castle.

All year round we have activities in and around Castle Drogo for you to take part in. We have specialised tours of the house and the gardens, croquet lessons, house quizzes, garden trails, living history and much more.

Our cafe is open throughout the year serving the very best of local and seasonal products. Also located in the visitor centre is our shop and plant centre offering a wide selection of gifts, souvenirs and local produce.

Castle Drogo is leaking very badly. The roof needs to be repaired, the walls repointed and the windows fixed. This will be done during our major building project which will start next year. Find out more...
