About A week with the Lundy island rangerCome and help us conserve the natural beauty of a peaceful and stunning Lundy Island.
Join a ranger for a week of practical conservation work on the stunning Lundy Island, a granite outcrop in the Bristol Channel where seabird numbers have tripled in the last 15 years. Even the island name comes from Norse and means ‘puffin’. Lundy is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and home to a variety of rare and important flora and fauna that you’ll hopefully get to see on your trip.
You could be working on any part of the tiny three mile by half a mile island, whether that’s on the heathland plateau, in one of the tree copses or on the scenic east coast. Tasks could range from dry-stone and mortar walling to fencing but are mainly focused on eradicating invasive rhododendron as part of a long-term project.
About the accommodation
The Barn is situated in the centre of the island’s village. It has two dormitory rooms which are lined with varnished wood. It has a large open-plan living room/kitchen with a big open fire and, from the sleeping gallery, one of the best views of the island.
Facilities: open fire/woodburner.
Bedding: All bedding/linen is provided.
Notes for guests
Transport: Participants will need to book their own helicopter flight (which is not included in the price of the holiday). Be aware that the travel to and from the island is via helicopter and may be disrupted due to weather conditions but should be just delayed if it is. Any concerns contact the ranger (firstname.lastname@example.org) or a member of the Bideford Shore Office.
What to bring: All Gloves provided, but sturdy (preferably steel toe-capped) boots would be needed. Good quality water proofs and extra layers will be required and preferably a second pair of footwear.
A standard kit list can be found on our Essential Information page.
