New Exhibition - From Around Here
Discover From Around Here, an exhibition showcasing creative responses to the culture, communities and character of Birmingham’s Southside, developed by students from Birmingham City University’s Department of Fashion & Jewellery in partnership with the Birmingham Back to Backs.
The project began in 2023 with students exploring the remarkable work of master tailor George Saunders at the Back to Backs. Building on this experience, a new phase launched in 2024, focusing on Southside – an area celebrated for its energy, diversity and creative spirit.
More than 150 students have participated in the project, responding to a live heritage brief and bringing their own backgrounds, perspectives and creative practices to the work. Inspired by the people, places and cultures of Birmingham’s Southside, they have created a range of pieces including jewellery, fashion, textiles, illustration, photography, digital media and wallpaper designs.
Working alongside local figures, including Twiggy, the students celebrate the voices, stories and communities that continue to shape the area today.
The exhibition also features a shared colour palette developed collaboratively by Birmingham City University and the Back to Backs, inspired by Southside’s streets, spaces and communities. Running throughout the displayed works, the palette reflects the vibrancy and diversity of the neighbourhood.
Together, these creative responses highlight how Birmingham’s communities continue to inspire innovation, creativity and contemporary design.

The exhibition will close at the end of May next year.
