Accessibility at Shaw's Corner

We believe Shaw's Corner should be open and accessible for all. Read on to discover how best you can visit to experience and enjoy nature, beauty and history.

Arrival and parking

  • There are two blue badge car parking spaces in our small car park, located next to the visitor reception. If these are full, visitors can be dropped off alongside the visitor reception.
  • Entrance to the house and garden are 50 metres away, along flat gravel paths.

Moving around the site

  • Our visitor reception doorway has two steps. There are no handrails, but ramps are available.
  • There are two steps into the house. There are no handrails, but ramps are available.
  • The entrance door is 100cm wide. Doors to the ground floor showrooms are 89cm wide.
  • There are three steps when leaving the back entrance. There are no handrails and we recommend people using wheelchairs to enter and exit through the main front door.
  • Access to the upstairs is via a curving 18-step staircase.
  • Step-free access is possible around the garden, with gravel and grass paths throughout.
  • There are benches, tables and chairs dotted around the garden.
  • We have two single-seater mobility vehicles available to borrow on a first-come first-served basis. To guarantee access, we recommend booking at least 24 hours in advance. To book, please call 01438 820307.

Facilities

  • There are two unisex toilets available at Shaw’s Corner. One is on the ground floor of the house, accessible from the garden. There are two steps and no handrails to access this. We also have a temporary accessible toilet located next to the visitor reception and car park. There is a rail on one side of the toilet.
  • Seats without arm rests are available for visitors in the kitchen, entrance hall, and on the first-floor landing.

Useful resources

  • For those unable to reach the first floor of the house, there is an iPad available which shows a video with sound and subtitles.
  • Assistance dogs are welcome inside the house. All dogs on leads and under close control are welcome in the garden and visitor reception.
