Discover the fascinating world of Helix Pomatia, the famous Roman Snail, at Chedworth Roman Villa this May half-term (24 May – 1 June 2025)
These remarkable creatures were introduced by the Romans nearly 2,000 years ago as a culinary delicacy. Their descendants now thrive within our ancient walls, attracting enthusiasts from across the country.
The Snail Trail offers families an array of snail-inspired activities including:
* Play the Giant Snail Slip 'n Slide outdoor board game – will you slide to victory or slip into the cooking pot?
* Strap on a shell and snail eyes and challenge each other to some snail racing
* Master the "Snail Shuffle" balancing challenge
* Test your skills at the "Snailed It" beanbag toss
* Inspect a Roman snail shell at our magnifying station
* Send messages to ancient villa residents via "Snail Mail"
* Play Snail Twister with friends and family Hunt for Pom, our Roman Snail mascot, hiding amongst the artefacts in the Museum
* Play snail-inspired board games in the Play Pavilion.
Don't miss our special weekend storytelling sessions featuring the adventures of Pom. There is also the chance to try our new audio guide narrated by this famous time travelling snail.
Standard admission applies (Free for National Trust members). No booking required. Bring a picnic or visit our café.
